Here at Trupanion, we’re always looking for ways to grow, learn, and help our team members. Naturally, our culture thrives on collaboration and our shared love of pets. For this installment of Working at Trupanion, we sat down with Trupanion data analyst Malia Prescott to learn more about what it’s like to work from home helping animals with a leader in the pet health industry.
Work from home helping animals in the pet health industry
Current role at Trupanion
Data analyst.
How did your career journey start at Trupanion?
I started in the claims department in 2016 as a data assistant where I opened claims and made sure incoming medical records were sorted properly. After about two years in that role, I joined the Analytics team, where I get to use my degree in quantitative analysis and my knowledge I gained in the claims department to research our claims and other aspects of the veterinary industry. I’m coming up on my fifth anniversary at Trupanion later this year!
What do you love about working remotely at Trupanion?
I love that I’ve been able to customize my workspace to make my ideal work environment. I really liked our office (especially the office dogs and cats!), but as with any office, there were lots of distractions. Working from home lets me be more productive because I can put my head down and focus. I also love the fact that I haven’t had to wear a real pair of pants to work in almost a year.
What do you love most about your role?
I love that every day I’m learning something new. My job as a data analyst means I get to ask lots of questions and dig deep to find the answers with the ultimate goal of helping pets live healthier and better lives.
What’s an ideal day for you?
Now that I’m working from home, usually I roll out of bed about five minutes before I start work. My mornings usually consist of meetings, checking in with my team, and the teams I support. Then I take a short walk with my Golden Retriever, FRANKIE, at lunchtime to get some fresh air. After lunch is my focused work time where I can dig deep into my projects.
What’s your favorite part of your workday?
My favorite part of my day is when I’ve been working hard on a problem and suddenly everything comes together and it just *works*. It’s so satisfying after having been battling with the code all day. I’ll never get tired of that feeling.
What’s it like to work on the Trupanion analytics team?
My team is so great. I have so much respect for everyone, they’re all supportive and collaborative, and brilliant at what they do. We hold a regular ‘show and tell’ where we share the cool things we’ve been working on or a new skill the rest of the team would be interested in.
It’s a great way to keep the team connected, especially since we’re all working remotely. Also, we make sure to make time for fun, whether that’s virtual happy hours or an activity like a virtual escape room, which we’re doing in a couple of weeks.
What do you value most about the work you do?
I love that the work I do allows dogs and cats to live their healthiest and happiest lives. As a service dog handler, I know firsthand how impactful that can be.
In turn, I can get my lifeline the best veterinary care possible, regardless of cost. Most of all, knowing that I get to help support that for all of our members is priceless.
Further, I’m proud to be a part of Trupanion’s new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council, which formed last year after the Black Lives Matter movement brought to light the need for systemic change in our society.
What is the one thing you would want people to know about working at Trupanion?
Everyone here LOVES pets. This foundation creates a strong common ground and it’s so great to come to work every day united around a mission that we all deeply believe in.
