Best Two Syllable Dog Names by Janice Jones |Updated 11-29-2023
You may want a fancy dog name with multiple syllables, but did you know that most dogs respond best to one or two syllable dog names? Short names are also easier on you when you go to train your dog and when calling your dog from the other side of a dog park.
How is the best way to come up with a great dog name for that new furry bundle of joy? Think about the dog, your lifestyle, and your comfort level with names.
- What do you first notice about that puppy’s personality?
- Does the color of his hair remind you of something?
- Is that tiny puppy in need of a big dog name?
- What do you eventually want to do with that puppy? (take him to the beach, sail with him, hike up a mountain)
Get Everyone to Agree on a Name
A new puppy can bring great joy to all members of a household, but finding the perfect name is not so easy when you have kids. Each child is likely to want to choose the name and some of those names may just not be appropriate. A little guidance from parents may be in order.
Once you have chosen a puppy, the name game begins. It isn’t a bad idea to choose a name long before the puppy can go home to live with you. If everyone agrees on a name, great. Ask the breeder to start calling your puppy by his name and by the time the puppy goes home, he will already know his name.
If no one can agree, there are a couple different approaches you can take.
- Ask the breeder to send you a video or some photos. Better still, if you live nearby, visit the breeder and play with your puppy. This type of activity often inspires you to chose one name over another.
- Older children should be able to articulate why they think one name is better than another. A preschool age child is not likely to give great reasons other than, “I like that name.” Choosing a name is not easy so if your child has put effort into the thought process, definitely consider the name, assuming it is an appropriate name to call out in a public place.
- Limit names to one or two syllables as a way to eliminate a long list of possible names.
