It’s hard to imagine anything better than cuddling with your best furry friend after a long stressful day. But it’s not just us humans that love cuddling – dogs love it, too. Snuggling (not to be confused with hugging) keeps your dog warm and alleviates stress.
Like with us humans, cuddling increases oxytocin (the “love” hormone) levels in dogs.
My dog absolutely loves to cuddle and will lounge on the couch with me for hours snuggled against my side. Not all dogs are big on cuddling, but some of the breeds notorious for their snuggling habits are:
1. Golden Retriever
The quintessential family dog, Golden Retrievers are big, snuggly, cuddly goofballs. Goldens are incredibly affectionate with their humans and loyal to a fault. They’re gentle, fun-loving and are perfectly content to cuddle with you on the couch.
Goldens are completely oblivious to their size and are happy being giant lap dogs.
2. Labrador Retriever
Labs are another popular family dog because of their fun-loving spirit, kind nature and general love for humans. They make excellent service dogs, and they’re happy to spend all of their time with their human families – preferably in their laps.
3. Chihuahua
Tiny but mighty, the Chihuahua tends to get a bad reputation. Yes, they can be fierce and feisty, but they can also be incredibly affectionate with their humans.
Chihuahuas tend to favor one or two humans, and they’re perfectly happy to spend the rest of their days with their people. They love to snuggle and are the perfect size for lap naps.
4. Great Dane
Great Danes don’t understand that they’re basically mini horses. Try to tell them otherwise – I dare you! They love to spend time with their humans and won’t hesitate to cuddle in your lap.
Affectionate, kind, loyal and loving, Great Danes are giant teddy bears that love the occasional belly rub.
5. Boxer
Goofy, fun and affectionate, Boxers are excellent family dogs that are up for anything – big adventure or a lazy afternoon snuggled on the couch. If they could, they’d glue themselves to your leg so that they’re always in your reach.
If you can wear them out, they’re happy to cuddle and watch a movie with you or the kids.
6. Pit Bull
Pit Bulls unfairly get a bad name, but these snuggly dogs love spending time cuddling with their humans. They’re loyal, affectionate and silly dogs that don’t mind being the center of attention.
As long as their humans are nearby, Pitties are happy.
7. Dachshund
The “hot dogs” of the canine world, Dachshunds have personalities ten times their size. Sure, they can be sassy and downright moody, but at the end of the day, they love their humans. They’re happy to cuddle up in your lap or up against you on the couch.
As long as they’re up against you, they’re happy.
Be mindful of your Doxie’s fragile back! Invest in a good doggy ramp to enjoy safe, happy couch cuddles.
8. Australian Shepherd
Aussie Shepherds are considered one of the most intelligent dogs out there, but they’re also surprisingly affectionate. Independent and highly intelligent breeds are generally not big on cuddling, but Aussies are an exception.
Those that are friendly and outgoing love to cuddle up on the couch or in your lap. They love interacting and spending time with their people.
9. Greyhound
Greyhounds may be the fastest dogs in town, but they also love to cuddle and hang out with their humans. These quiet, sweet and gentle dogs can be calm and graceful.
Both miniature and full-size greyhounds are almost always friendly and incredibly docile.
10. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The definition of a lap dog. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are cuddly, soft and affectionate dogs. Their favorite place is always at your side, whether you want to play or just lounge around the house.
As long as you’re nearby, they’re happy to tag along.
11. Collie
Furry, loyal and affectionate, Collies (Lassie!) are true people dogs. Sure, they may try to herd their people, especially the tiny humans, but they do it with love.
Collies get along with everyone. They make excellent family dogs and are great with small children. Along with their love for cuddles, Collies are exceptionally smart and outgoing.
12. Irish Wolfhound
Don’t let their hugs size fool you – the Irish Wolfhound is a 120-pound lap dog that is happy to cuddle for hours. These gentle giants are known for their kind and loving demeanor. They’re playful and outgoing, making them a great family dog.
As long as they get the exercise they need, Irish Wolfhounds are happy to snuggle and be lazy with you all afternoon.
These 12 dog breeds love to cuddle and are known for their kind, gentle natures. Cuddling isn’t limited to the breeds on this list. Most dogs love snuggling up to their humans and spending some much-needed quality time together.
