Six Harbors Brewing Company is a family owned and operated brewery that opened in May 2018. Located on one of Long Island’s prettiest and vibrant coastline towns of Huntington, it’s the town’s first and only micro-brewery.
When the Coronavirus hit, the brewery could no longer have guests at their location, so they had to find new ways sell their brew and deliver it to their thirsty customers.
Karen and Mark Heuwetter the owners of the brewery enlisted the help of dog pals Buddy and Barley, collectively known as the ‘brew dogs’ to offer curb-side deliveries. The couple began taking the pups on delivery trips with them, and the town of Huntington quickly fell in love.
“Buddy and Barley are superstars in the town of Huntington,” Karen Heuwetter, one of the owners, told CBS News.
The dogs are now famous and requested on numerous deliveries. These two golden retrievers run door to door with decorative four packs around their necks to highlight the beer deliveries, the cans are all empty and Mark and Karen carry the actual delivery for customers.
Karen pointed out that using the dogs for deliveries helps them maintain social distancing guidelines, putting them and their customers’ minds at ease.
When the dogs come to the door, customers can also take a picture with the famous brew dogs to memorialize the occasion. It brings a personal touch that is much needed during this time of quarantine and isolation.
“When they go out and make people smile, I think people really like that. In fact, people need that these days, so when they put a smile on people’s faces they’re doing their job — which, by nature, is easy for them,” Karen told CBS News.
The brewery has been struggling economically during the lockdown. Mark estimated that business was down “60 to 70% of what it normally is”. On a positive note the brewery has seen an increase in online sales ever since they started taking the dogs out. Customers are even able to request them for deliveries.
If you’re in the area visit their website and purchase some beer for pick-up, delivery or in state sales.
